Sundari: An Actor Prepares
Sundari: An Actor Prepares is based on a play directed by Anuradha Kapur. Jayshankar was a popular female impersonator of Gujrati stage in the early 20th century Bombay. Based on his autobiography the play traces his journey as an actor, from a boy to a man and simultaneously from a male to a female. Centered around the works of eminent painters Bhupen Khakkar and Nilima Sheikh, the film documents this process in the context of contemporary discourses on gender, body performance and history of Indian theatre.
